The Medico-Educational Centre of white orchids now welcomes 120 children, teenagers and adults from 2 to 50 in its services. Due to the enormous needs and the lack of support and accompanying activity (originally designed in the 1970s for ages 6-16) is extended to different age groups.


1. background

The white orchids NGO aims the defence of rights and interests of people with intellectual disabilities and their families. It strives to implement everything that is necessary for the cognitive, physical and social development of subjects with mental disabilities so that they are partners in the socio-economic development of the country.

In addition to its direct educational actions, the Organization have also actions of awareness, information and advocacy, and actively participates in all representative and advisory bodies relating to the disability.

The NGO has its headquarters in Antananarivo where she manages an educational institution. The center has 6 buildings for its support activities.

Medico-Educational Centre offers its services to people with intellectual disabilities. 120 children, teenagers and adults currently receiving support in home day, or at the scene of the person's life. The youngest is 2 years old and the oldest is now 50 years old.

The Center offers educational support through the programming of activities relating all areas of development, and the full social participation. Support for families, listening and counselling services, as well as medical and psychological follow-up are also integrated into the services provided.


2. the reasons for the establishment of an early home of children from 2 years


At the birth of the child or at the time of the diagnosis, there is generally no guidance given by health services, parents find themselves without guides. Educational errors are relatively frequent, as well as late support and a huge nomadism in the care of these children. What causes a relatively low performance level, and behavior problems.

For families, it was to find educational advice, as well as a place to listen and speak.

The white orchids NGO wanted to stimulate the potential of the child and reduce the problems of behaviour which may constitute an obstacle to future learning.

The objective is to optimize the development of the child, to bring it to show more intellectual appetite and promote its exchanges with other children and other adults.

Fears initially concerned  the interest and commitment of parents for this service. It is always very difficult for parents of young children recognize the child's disability and the decision to integrate the child at the Centre.

3. early accompaniment at the white orchids center


The Section was set up in 1999. Previously, the NGOs had already allowed parents of young children in outpatient. It is the increasing number of these consultations that led her to reflect on a less specific action.

In almost a year, the project has been developed, the objectives with a reflection on the mode of operation and material needs. The NGO has consulted various documents describing what was done in other countries, and conducted tours of structures abroad. Then, the structure has begun to receive children and gradually improved the accompaniment approach.

Once a week, the children are accompanied by a member of the family. Stimulation activities are proposed, as well as times of Exchange and educational boards.

The more often, parents come spontaneously. The first contact allows to evaluate the operation of the child and to identify the request of the parents. Then, the establishment invites parents to come to a meeting to observe the activities proposed and subsequently decide on the integration of the child. This thoughtful parental involvement is needed to ensure the continuity of the accompaniment. The NGO also works with other health services when a complementary specific support is necessary.


4 ways

On the human level: One of the teachers of the institution ensures the animation from the early home Section. A volunteer from Belgium came to support the centre initially for the structuring of the Section and the technical support from the teacher. Specialised team of coaching professionals provide the technical coaching.

Financially : the Unicef has provided financial support for this project.

On technical and material: The advantage was to have an already functional structure: premises and some educational materials were already available. However, the centre did also the acquisition of new toys and new furniture more targeted for the early reception.


5. assessment


The results obtained up to now are going in the direction of expectations; There is a difference in the positivity of the functioning and evolution compared with those who have not benefited from this early support.

For members of the families, there is a valuation of their experiences as parents. Thanks to advice, support the child approaches are more objective.

This early home allows you to better prepare the future learning, thus facilitating the implementation of educational projects for children are more permeable and more active. It is very gratifying for educators.

The children are now brought into the NGO at a younger age and parents have an ambition of higher education. However, better training of health workers at the reception and orientation of children with disabilities is necessary so that the accompaniment starts as soon as possible.

The difficulties lie in waiting for miraculous healing of the part of the parents. Which sometimes causes a disappointment and the judgment of the accompaniment.

The reaction of some doctors also prejudice this accompaniment. Many advise parents not to send children to medico-social institutions associations, saying that this will aggravate the deficiency of the child.

Early support is important for a good start of the life project. But it is necessary to well organize the activities to ensure the viability and sustainability of the actions undertaken.
