Computer tools to create multimedia activities adapted to the students, who serve as supports for school exercises. What offers them another modality of support to work around their difficulties and ensure a progression.


Monique Moizan is Professor of schools, specialized AIS (adaptation and school integration), graduate CAIE (certificate of fitness to the exceptional children) in disorders of behavior and conduct in 1973, and then in psychological rehabilitation in 1984. From 1969 to 1996, she taught at the University of the Valley Foundation, infant-juvenile psychiatric hospital in Gentilly (94).

Since 1996, she has worked at the special school of the Medical Institute Dr. Louis-Le-Guillant in Villejuif (94), where she holds a position of teacher of first degree, responsible for aid to rehabilitation dominant. Its function is in the individualized school support pupils with special educational needs specific, related to a situation of disabilities of various origins, where the disorders of cognitive functions are always present and often associated with other types of disabilities. She works with children from 6 to 14 years enrolled in IMP (Institute Medico-pedagogique) and young people from 14 to 20 years in IMPro (Institute Medico-professionnel).

Throughout his career, Monique Moizan was required to implement the specific teaching strategies to accommodate students who could not enter the learning in the traditional way. Failing to find in school tools publishers (books, workbooks exercise or digital learning materials), aid to learning adapted to the specificity of each student, it has built its own tools over the years of professional practice. One day, she discovered the J-click software, which brought him a great help and a great satisfaction because it allows to create its own exercises containing sound, images, interactivity.

The interests of the computer tool, for students with disabilities

It is a contemporary, highly valued instrument because of the place it holds in our society. Handling contributes to the development of the pleasure of learning. Mediation that the computer can offer as an educational tool is not usually known. The student/machine relationship is different from the one established with the teacher. The machine is a mediator who is remotely affect and the gaze of the other.

Compared with control issues often present, if the student who becomes master of his action against the computer, master of his learning of his accomplishments; the teacher then having a position of guide, Advisor, accompanying support. We know as among young people with Autistic disorders the relationship with others is complex, while the established with the machine seems natural. L' student is thus confronted with his own gaze returned by the machine, rather than that of his teacher, with any impartiality, confidentiality it can provide. However, one can also meet students whose anxiety is such that on the contrary, they can detach from the eyes of adults, who need to scrutinize the slightest sign of approval or disapproval. It is difficult for them then to be "single" face on the screen. Should then reassure them, to work on the confidence building to enable them to break away from the gaze of the adult and empower themselves.

The computer also gives another dimension to the trace that students leave their learning, their achievements: what cannot yet be shown, the computer may keep "secret" in its memory, or even to delete it, pending the timing to reproduce on paper, print it. Achievements are still malleable, changeable. The error, the awkwardness are not irremediable. They become the subject of review, correction, improvement. Be wrong to learn.

Software: JClic, numerical exercises creation tool

Failing to find school tools to publishers, aid to learning adapted to the specificity of each of his students, Monique Moizan introduced next hardware 'paper' it is built, the computer tool - for the qualities he is known to this day. She used a program that allows to develop its own exercises: JClic. It is a free software (under GPL license: General Public License) of Spanish origin (University of Catalonia) available for download from its official website ( It is developed in Java, it requires to install previously this platform on their computer to be able to use it. It allows the creation of multimedia activities various which may take the form of puzzles, of associations, Wordsearch, crosswords, dictation of reordering of elements and text activities. Can import their own pictures or photos, audio, videos. It offers a large number of possibilities. Monique Moizan has created simple exercises adapted to his students in great difficulty, as well in reading and mathematics. All these exercises can be printed on maps manipulated on table in order to adapt these materials in various forms, and accompanied by the worksheets she has prepared.

Children or young people may participate in exercises where they have the capacity. The exercises created by Monique McNeil have been collected on a site titled ClicLire, helps reading learning so that its students, or others, can use them if they have internet and if they desire.

This software allows a clear presentation and structured, without stimulus or useless information in excess, as it can be found in some software to educational nature of the trade. Thus, the Organization of its 'pages' database is always the same.

The exercises are usable for the teacher as many times as necessary and can be adjusted at any time, which is often the case for students in academic difficulty. A notion can be approached in various ways, without that the repetition is felt as "the already done". It is useful indeed, and even essential to strengthen by various entries and the acquisition of a concept. Conversely, the fact that different concepts are addressed with exercises using the same structure allows the student to keep already established benchmarks which facilitates learning.

Detailed rules related to the computer tool

Mouse : the first step to master to the student is the use of mice, which demand a hand-eye coordination, plus a transfer of the horizontal plane to the vertical plane, that some did not. The observation of its manipulation by the student is for teachers a way to assess its level of spatial organization. I realized that many don't know or cannot ask their look and are oriented, nor held in the plan area of the screen (vertical plane), or even on one sheet, (horizontal plane). However the screen attracts, catching the eye. The pointer of the mouse, I enlarged (it happened to me to substitute a showier icon) is of great assistance to facilitate tracking. The JClic software offers the possibility to design exercises that allow work on observation, analysis, the Organization of the space. However the use of the mouse turns initially impossible for some children in great difficulty driving, or whose hand-eye perception is too faulty.

The technological evolution which brought touchscreens on the market is that these children are then more deprived of access to learning on computer. Space in two dimensions is explored physically by the gesture, with both hands if need be, the pointer is a fingerthe choice of the child (a child uses mainly the thumb). The gesture, its accuracy is worked with its subtleties : touch once gives the same answer that hit two times and touch to "take" an object, move and touch to "ask" is yet another gesture. It is not always clear but the desire to act and help lead to overcome the difficulty.  It is this experiment that led to integrate the operation of the mouse, the cursor naturally taking the place of the finger. A little girl refused the computer year because unable to use the mouse.  After a few months of use of the touch screen, it now wants to use only the classical computer.

Keyboard : its use enables young people who have significant graphic difficulties to produce quality written with a wide selection (shape and size) font. However the layout of letters on the keyboard first asked an organization of this space. To do this, our occupational therapist gave us assistance through a "buildup" of the keyboard by means of stickers: larger letters and a color for each row. Then children Bluestork © trademark keyboards have appeared on the market with large letters and colours for the vowels, consonants, figures and punctuation keys.

The Images and sound : they are an essential support for these students to significant cognitive impairment, for whom abstraction poses problem. Digital photos of the known environment, can find themselves to be reassured and those unknown surroundings bring enlightenment and knowledge. The drawings and pictographic representations lead to the symbolization. But the most innovative technological input from the computer in my opinion is the association of image and interactive sound. Is attention grabber, trigger Word, "Integrator" of the acquisition, through repetition by the user, sometimes spontaneous and almost always extremely joyful or playful, what is heard. It is essential in the work of auditory discrimination, the development of phonological awareness, of the joint, the verbal understanding... it can be heard at will by a simple click.

Learning is reinforced by the feedback of the gesture or the click of the mouse, with the notion of success or failure, unless the failure is disadvantageous because the student can repeat as many times as necessary. The non success takes then value of learning and leads to integrate Visual analysis is necessary before the gesture or action to be successful.

Computer science, a tool to exceed or circumvent the difficulties

The computer has found a place often decisive in the progress of learning of students of Monique Moizan, as this software allows to design and carry out exercises "to measure". Many of these students are capable of learning as long as we discover with them the entry, the steps, the triggers that will allow them to access. The objective individual is bring all the support and the tools to exceed or circumvent their difficulties and ensure a progression. For the older ones, the particular situation that is offered to them will give them a possibility to enter the learning experienced as "laborious" and bearers of risk, without having to undergo the eyes of others. Older teens or young adults have claimed individual support two years before their release, say at age 18, to try a learning to read who has managed, at least at a functional level.
