From IME Equilibre the Oct 23, 2012

The IME "Equilibre" Centre (Medical and Education Institute "Balance") has developed an activity of awareness of hygiene for children with mental disabilities with the assistance of the NGO WaterAid. If everyone is healthy and in harmony with her body, then academic learning and activities are well and pose no problem. This awareness spread today to the families of the children.

1. Presentation of the EM1 balance balance Medico-educational Institute is an association, created in September 2002, providing a framework suitable for children with mental disabilities and enable them to have their place in society.

The EMI is set in a villa of 6 parts association leased Ambaranjana in Antananarivo, 2 rooms are devoted to the class as well as a bungalow outside. The EMI receives 12 children and could accommodate up to 25 but the situation of crisis of the country makes it difficult to financial participation for parents which is 70,000 aryaris (€25) per month including support and the lunch.

Parents bring children in the morning and come look for them at night. The school is open from 8: 30 to 16: 30. We offer occupational therapy and speech therapy experts. Schooling is provided by a teacher.

Children are also operative activities, pottery, space tracking. We also offer gardening and outputs two times per semester for green classes and a class at Camp annually.
The children come from all backgrounds, some affluent, of other poor.

2. Why teach children about hygiene?

The Director of the centre is doctor neuropsychiatrist and the health of the children is paramount for our association. We have implemented action to promote hygiene. Indeed, if everyone is healthy and in harmony with her body, then academic learning and activities are well and pose no problem.

3 Show for children by taking action in terms of the hand hygiene: if I eat with dirty hands, I have a sore stomach. We therefore give examples. Two educators get dirty hands, one will eat directly, and the other goes to wash their hands. Explained that the 'false' gesture gives colly, prevents us from going to school.
After each activity, we ask them to wash their hands. To do this, we use a Bell after each course.

Hygiene of the teeth: we show children the usefulness of brushing teeth with photos and sometimes even with their own teeth or those of educators.

Toilet hygiene: it teaches children to use the lavatory after having been to the toilet even if it does only pee. We also learned gestures is reality, we have a toilet in the House. Often in Madagascar, the Toilets are outdoors. It does not grow to hygiene.

For the hygiene of the body: when we notice that a child is dirty, we do not hesitate to give it a shower here. We teach them to take a shower daily.

We also tried an action for hygiene and protection of sexuality but some parents refused categorically. We make a point, however, as educators, to talk about hygiene and sexuality in particular with large.

4. The means of the IME we are a team of 6 people currently and all participated in this action because we are versatile. We share our experiences during team meetings and a binding specification.
Our partner for this action was Wateraid, an NGO specialist hygiene and drinking water. They have trained, they have visited the centre and followed up after a few months. We use their posters that are everywhere in the building.
The Director who is a doctor is very strong support and was able to provide gloves and soaps, liquids and other materials.

5 Evolution, this action was started in 2009. We can now measure the effects; When children are at home, they ask parents to renew these acts of hygiene that have become automatic. They are also examples for parents and extended family.

The children ask to have toothpaste at home for brushing teeth. We have reached in large part the objective for washing hands and teeth and use the toilet. For personal hygiene, hygiene and sexuality, much remains to do and improve.

Parents have been the hardest to convince. Some parents said we have "pissed off" that their child always asked to wash their hands. The water and SOAP are not free and running water is not in all the houses. It may fetch at the public fountain.

Centre pipes are in poor condition, sometimes we are forced to use containers and buckets. Push-button valves would be very useful. Only another association in Madagascar has.

More a child today does its needs in the Court. Since the beginning of this action, we have more diarrhea problem and children are satisfied and happy to do this activity.

Hold this advertising project yet ways and each person likely to support us is welcome. We live in effect on the day the day.
