The association conducts studies and expertise in architecture, acoustics and humanities. It works in particular to the improvement of acoustic habitability of housing for vulnerable and disabled people.

  1. The context

  • A word about your association "stones that sing": where is it located? What is its purpose? What are its areas of expertise?

THE STONES THAT SING (LPC) is a non-profit consultancy specialized in architecture, acoustics and disability. Olivier is acoustician, CNRS researcher and graduate of the school of architecture of Paris-La-Villette (DPEA); Cécile acousticienne, Assistant research and specialized in the study of the behavior of people with autism in the habitat. Our association is located in Brittany; its headquarters is in Moëlan-sur-Mer (29). Its main corporate purpose the improvement of acoustic habitability of vulnerable people.

-What are the types of advice, proposed (e) s?

LPC mainly offers a helpline to owner with an acoustic indication. LPC specializes in the support and the monitoring of architectural projects (construction or renovation) of the medico-social institutions. The association can also provide a professional training service on the specific question of the issues to take into account the acoustic factor in habitat of people with disabilities.

-Where can she be?

LPC works in France and abroad.

  1. The purpose of the action

-How did you come to work for medico social centres?

Initially specialized in the phenomena of resonance of medieval abbeys, we have been asked, at a conference, by Marc Marhadour (CEO of the 44 ADAPEI) to transpose our skills in the habitat of people with ASD. He said the rehabilitation of a facility open for three months which featured acoustic malfunctions that are harmful for the health of residents and employees. After you have made a solution for this Center, we we are phased serving constructions of medico-social institutions (IME, MAS, FAM, ESAT) for ADAPEI 44 and 56.

-What are the consequences of a poorly integrated sound factor in architecture?

If the dimensions, volumes and materials of architecture are not adapted to the vocal range, to the frequency modulations screams, the place of life of people with disabilities is more soothing HOSPITALITY mission, but becomes a stressful place and hostility which the acoustic characteristics are likely to amplify the phenomena of crisis.

-How would you characterize your goal?

LPC aims to protect the "ECHO-SYSTEM" of the person with disabilities, convinced that accessibility issues are not reduced to the only motor disabilities.

  1. Implementation, the conduct

  • What is the relationship between your work on acoustics in buildings, in particular those used for the music and your institutional work?

Our knowledge of the know-how of the builders in acoustic material in medieval times, crossed with the technology of the 21st century allows us to bring an added value on the integration of the noise factor in architecture, as well as on the emotional resonances that are related.

  • When did you start working on the sound factor in school?

Our involvement in the medico-social institutions dates back to October 2014.

  • Can you better define "echo-system" that you propose to improve?

This term is simple and easily understandable when it is written. He translated the taking into account of the noise factor in the living environment of human beings. In the ecological logic current HQE (high environmental quality), as well as the dynamics of an inclusive society, this term reminds that the sound issue is fundamental.

-How do you work? What are the different steps of your intervention?

We intervene at the request of the directors or managers of the development of institutions accommodating persons with disabilities. We are helping define the specifications before the launch of the public market. Then we meet the future residents (when it is possible), as well as the staff accompanying. We identify stressful noise sources, we of the Cree people any sound recordings. This then allows us to design architectural recommendations for the design of the project. Then we work in dialogue with the architect and the team of project management from beginning to the end of the project. Finally, ensure the last 'acoustic settings"by ensuring a mission of Council as to the nature and location of the furniture.

  1. The tools you needed?

  • Who is involved? Work with partners?

We are a team of two people.

  • on the financial front : The improvement sought 'echo-system' translates as an additional financial cost?

Our services have a cost, however, this investment allows significant savings in the medium and long term: If the taking into account of the acoustic factor is thought upstream, it is cheaper to renovate an existing building. In addition, improving this echo-system benefits not only people with disabilities but also to accompanying persons, reducing the consecutive psycho-social risk of excessive noise levels.

  • on technical and material : What protocols, devices, software do you possibly call?

We use the measuring devices and software necessary for the joint work with architects and acousticians-specific: ADOBE audition, ACOUBAT, AUTOCAD and CYPECAD MED.

  1. How do you evaluate today?

  • Have you achieved all or part that you had initially for the etablissementsde the ADAPEI? How have them you measured?

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives is done in two ways: 1) a theoretical approach related to acoustic measures Protocol and the drafting of a legal certificate of compliance; (2) an approach more dialogues on the basis of feedback from the staff accompanying about the behavior of people with disabilities

  • Have what challenges you faced? What are the limits of such action?

The main difficulty is to design a place to live that is not only tailored to welcome people today, but also this place to be ADAPTABLE to those who shall dwell there in 10 or 15 years. For a musical instrument or a medieval Abbey which were designed for a type directory and specific vocal tessitura, the sound setting of institutions for people with disabilities is a true work of maker! We must stay humble: we are perpetually looking for quality, without being some to a stradivarius every time.
