Evolutionary transition of occupational activity among young adults to the phase of pre-professional training in a center for mentally retarded youth.


Centre Aminata Mbaye, structure to accommodate children with intellectual disabilities, is located in the district of Grand Yoff in Dakar. It was created in 1998 by the Association ASEDEME (Senegalese Association for the Protection of Mentally Retarded Children).


 So since it opened in 2003, the center Aminata Mbaye, named its first president, supports school-age children and young adults in pre-vocational training.


 At birth the ASEDEME, the founding fathers had set as priority objectives the prevention of prenatal women in pregnancy, monitoring and care of mentally retarded children, the creation of a school for mentally handicapped .

This approach was to target the entire population of the suburbs face a situation of poverty exacerbated by the LTU. So we can classify the Centre under: evolution of the training of young mentally retarded.


Following the creation of ASEDEME, parents of first children of the association had to wait a while to see the achievement of objectives is the creation of the first Centre médico-psycho-pedagogical. Meanwhile, the children had grown and had exceeded the age limit. They could not imagine that all their sacrifices would only benefit the children of new members. They insisted at the office to find the solution to their grown children.


Initially, the formula for the afternoon was given by the desktop as occupational in two afternoons a week.


 The first year, 2004, the parents brought in many children. A dream finally became a reality! And parents until the end of the afternoon, exchanging them about their experiences and difficulties, to face the problems posed by their child. But as and months, absences became more frequent, due mainly to the issue of transport and fatigue.


 Around the month of May, there were only two families. The experience ended there. But nevertheless, they continued to demand a support for young adults, like younger people. The frustration continued to emerge among the first parent-members.

A small survey allowed to know that some children were placed to make learning in workshops neighborhoods. The solution was there, he had to propose a learning our grown children.


The idea was matured throughout 2005 and look forward to the parents, a test was launched during 2006. Unfortunately, the original members did not send their children and what were other young people who responded to the pre-professional learning project. This idea was responding to a request and a real need, not only families but also young adults with intellectual disabilities.


It was evident that this activity should be structured to make it better able to achieve the learning objectives and training have been waiting for families. This was done as early as 2007 with the arrival of someone more trained in managing projects and program funding. Gradually, the occupational side has given way to train a future profession.

Means used

First he had to recruit resource persons which possess proven expertise in their specialty. So that there arrived the ladies of the Social Center for the studio kitchen. This activity offered to children in the morning as a rehabilitation activity, turned into a cooking workshop for older children.


Given the interest shown by young people with disabilities, the sewing workshop followed with an official diploma, which corresponded to the wishes of the girls. Arrived shoemaking and carpentry, two highly technical workshops. The ceramic workshop that existed in the form of rehabilitation activity was increased to a higher level because of its sponsorship by a local company.

Concerning the premises, thanks to the new building had been completed, the workshops had no problem with being housed. The doors were opened to the outside to provide a few time access to passersby. A foundation telephone company and an association of young Senegalese living abroad parrainèrent ceramic workshops, shoemaking, carpentry and hairdressing. Essential equipment were purchased and all cooking equipment.

The average time will be three years, but this time as the case may be longer. It must be said that we give them a pre-apprenticeship. They will become skilled with time. They have learned to organize to help the architect with whom they work. Only in exceptional circumstances they can fend for themselves.
