The capacity of the service-SIGHAR is 110 babies and children.

  1. What purpose pursue this service

First SIGHAR exists to meet a demand from parents. There is a lack of structure of early care for children with down syndrom in Casablanca. But this need for a multidisciplinary care and parental guidance  in the 1st month of life, namely during the pregnancy, was essential.

This service does not replace the paediatric services. Turned to help and accompany him.

  • It provides parental guidance.

  • He proposed a project of life.

  • It provides a multidisciplinary care grouped in the same structure.

The tasks which have been assigned to this service are:

  • early action: Guidance, rehabilitation, medical follow-up, Integration in nurseries.

  • Awakening: Guidance, educational support, paramedical care, school integration.

  1. Operating of the service

The service started in 2005 with the following benefits:

  • Parental guidance.

  • Support speech and language therapy, psychomotor.

  • Psychological, medical, physical therapy.

  • Educational workshops.

  • School monitoring and guidance.

The service runs according to a schedule of supports which are all held in the premises of ANAIS. These interventions can be individual or grouped, depending on the needs of the child, given his personal project.

This project is built on the basis of the request of the parents. An assessment of the child is taken ove by the doctor who translates it to a prescription. So these are the individualized child needs that are the basis of our support.

Children who attend the centre are all in Casablanca. They are accompanied by parents. They come for some scheduled meetings but did not stay to eat on the spot.

  1. The resources you have?

The personnel involved includes a pole, a doctor, psychologists, speech therapists, O therapists and educators.

In terms of the methods we use to:

  • sensorimotor methods.

  • The sensory awakening.

  • The games.

  • Relaxation and relaxation techniques.

  1. How do you evaluate today?

Thanks to this early support, we were able to observe:

In children :

  • An improvement of motor and language functions.

  • The development of their cognitive functions.

  • A better socialization and autonomy.

  • Improved school integration in the community.

  • Greater acceptance of disability.

  • Greater involvement in the therapeutic project.

We have seen changes at the entrance to the school as well as in the daily life of families. Difficulties remain however due to a lack of involvement of some parents in support.

School integration in the community remains a challenge which is not always achieved.

This service is appreciated as a prevention action, that benefits the child. It is also an offer to the parents of a space of information, of support, of listening and guidance.
